CWA Review: Perfumed Letters by:Robin T. Smith

Perfumed Letters
About the Book:
Every woman knows how special it is to select just the right perfume and how a scent can capture an experience or evoke a memory like nothing else. In Perfumed Letters, Robin Smith offers a refreshing spiritual revelation regarding the intimacy of perfume, known as a woman s anointing. She uses powerful, evocative images from the Bible and life experiences to illustrate how God refines, presses, and fashions our individual scents as pleasing to the Lord.

Discover: Are you a concrete, absolute or an essential oil? Fragrances that attract blessing and repel favor The purpose and influence of a Perfumed Letter How God uses fragrance to remember His covenant with you Your signature fragrance in Christ and so much more! With writing that is fragrant with His word, love and experience, Robin gives a unique perspective on the ways in which each woman is fashioned in the aroma of His Spirit important and valuable to Him, written as His Perfumed Letter.

About the Author:
Robin Smith was born on March 24, 1982 in Centreville, Illinois. She is a single mother with one young son and currently in her 12th year of active duty service to the United States Air Force. A graduate of Cahokia High School, Robin is working on a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with Ashford University. In addition to motherhood, duty, and education, she is pursuing certification as an Etiquette Instructor in St. Louis, Missouri. A bit of an adrenaline junkie, when she is not writing, she is involved in traveling, hiking, and archery indoor rock climbing.

My Review:
We as women are so incredibly loved by a most fantastic and loving Father. Perfumed Letters, is a very unique book in that uses the process of making or creating perfume and uses it to show the correlation through witch God refines us and makes us truly permeable to Him and for His glory. The author takes several examples from the Bible to show us in a mighty way that we are a work in progress chosen to do a mighty work for the One who chose us. We all have those jobs in our lives that we busy ourselves with day in and day out but then there is also that work we are anointed to do that goes above and beyond our daily tasks.

With her sassy wit and charm, Ms. Robin T Smith, inspires us to embrace our anointing's and shine for our Creator. She informs us just as her grandmothers did her that when the evil one steps in to override what the Father tells us that we are to keep on going, NEVER giving him the upper hand. We are a unique gift in a very evil, sadistic world. If we are able to allow our perfume to spread throughout the land there is no stopping what we can do for the kingdom.

CWA Review: So Much The Better by:Megan Means

So Much the Better
About the Book:
"So Much The Better" is a chapter book for upper elementary but has also touched the hearts of all ages. The feedback the author received on her book, inspired her to get this message out to the world. So, she took the challenge and created a website and social media links to help get the book's message out to the world on-line. She also created a Curriculum Companion to the book which is offered for free on her website. It includes 21 lessons on character building that are taken directly from the book to help children become their best selves and inspire them to be great leaders.

The story is about a small lion named Ari. As a small cub, Ari's life is secure and safe. He plays and rests in the warm sunshine wit h his pride. One day this peaceful existence changes abruptly. Ari is taken far away from the other lions finding he is alone in unfamiliar surroundings. Ari is lost and without hope until he encounters help from Eliezer, a golden eagle who befriends him. Together they begin the long journey back to his homeland with many challenges to overcome. Upon his return Ari thought his quest had come to an end, but he realizes now, it has only just begun.

About the Author:
Megan Means has a passion for children's literacy and wants every child to have a love for books and reading. Megan desires to inspire children to become their best selves and to be leaders who make a positive difference in the lives of those around them. Megan's fondest memories are of the years when she home-schooled her children and the many adventures they had along the way. Today, she continues to write and would like to create a sequel to her story "So Much The Better".

My Review:
Ari never knew anything more than the protection of his family and closeness of their life together. His mother was right next him and she soothed him with stories of their ancestors. To his mother, Zahava keeping her cubs safe was priority number one. The day that the "black cloud" came to their world was a day I'm neither will forget. Ari was forever removed from his peaceful surroundings and lurched forward into a life that was unfamiliar and typically unsafe, besides that it was downright scary to the little lion cub. On Ari's arduous task of getting back to the life he knew, he had many fears to overcome. Not to mention challenges and situations that if dealt with the wrong attitude just would not go well for him.

The author has wrote a great read perfect for upper elementary school aged children. There are many Biblical type themes running through the plot lined that I really enjoyed seeing. I think it is great that author have included things like this in their writing. While it is a fairly short read, I'm sure it will be a winner among the animal lovers in your home. The story is a timeless one about overcoming our fears through faith.

CFBA Review: Dating, Dining, and Desperation by:Melody Carlson

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Dating, Dining, and Desperation
B&H Books (March 1, 2014)
by
Melody Carlson

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Over the years, Melody Carlson has worn many hats, from pre-school teacher to youth counselor to political activist to senior editor. But most of all, she loves to write! Currently she freelances from her home. In the past eight years, she has published over ninety books for children, teens, and adults--with sales totaling more than two million and many titles appearing on the ECPA Bestsellers List. Several of her books have been finalists for, and winners of, various writing awards.

She has two grown sons and lives in Central Oregon with her husband and chocolate lab retriever. They enjoy skiing, hiking, gardening, camping and biking in the beautiful Cascade Mountains.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Daphne Ballinger has learned to accept her deceased, eccentric aunt’s strange request that she marry in order to inherit her estate, along with taking over her aunt’s hometown paper’s advice column. But knowing and accepting that God’s will be done becomes harder when a new neighbor, a divorced socialite, learns of Daphne’s predicament and takes on the task of finding her the perfect man, even if it includes speed dating. When God does open Daphne’s heart, it is instead to take in a young girl left parentless and in the care of her dying grandmother. It may be a temporary arrangement until the girl’s uncle returns from the Marines, but God uses Daphne to speak His heavenly love and protection into the life of the child -- whom Daphne soon discovers has a very handsome and single uncle.

If you would like to read the first chapter of Dating, Dining, and Desperation, go HERE.

My Review:
Daphne loves living in the house that she inherited after her aunts death, the only problem is the stipulations. According to the will she has to marry within a year of receiving the home, or she'll have to find a new place to live. Question is how is she going to do that if she doesn't see anyone who is even interested and she has to continue running her aunts advice column? She has to find a way to do both within a year, all while working on a novel.

But luckily she has found a new friend, a nice girl who has moved in across the street. A girl who resembles a Malibu Barbie, who carries around a yelping chihuahua. From the minute this nice girl asked to borrow Daphne's shower, they were instant friends. Within a few minutes the girl is willing to help Daphne find the one, the special guy who is to help her stay in that amazing home. But when is that guy going to pop up and help? Because Daphne doesn't see him anywhere.

Review: A Dad's Prayers for His Daughter: Praying for Every Part of Her Life by:Rob Teigen/Joanna Teigen

A Dad's Prayers for His Daughter: Praying for Every Part of Her Life
About the Book:
From the moment a man becomes the dad of a daughter, he knows he's going to be doing a lot of praying. He wants to pray for his girl, but he may wonder, Where do I start? What should I be praying for?
The couple who brought you 88 Great Daddy-Daughter Dates now shows dads how to pray for their daughters. They assure dads that just because they don't always understand their little girls, that doesn't mean that God doesn't.

Collecting specific prayers that dads can use, along with stories from other dads about how God has answered their prayers for their girls, Rob and Joanna Teigen give men a strong foundation to build a lifelong habit of prayer for their daughters. They also explain a little more about girls and what they go through growing up, including stress, purity issues, social pressure, modesty challenges, spiritual growth, and more, so a dad can pray for every area of his daughter's life.

About the Authors:
Rob Teigen has been a publishing professional for more than fifteen years and is the author of three joke books, including Laugh-Out-Loud Jokes for Kids (under the pseudonym Rob Elliott). He and his wife, Joanna Teigen, are the parents of a teenage son and three younger daughters. They are the authors of 88 Great Daddy-Daughter Dates and live in West Michigan. Find out more at www.strongerdads.com.

My Review:
Watching my husbands interactions with our 16 year old daughter, a lot of times you will see me duck down just to avoid being invited into the conversation. He has found himself lately really struggling with her growing up. To him it seems it happened overnight, when in actuality it didn't. He just feels lately that he has been blindsided with an adult or almost adult daughter. I politely hold my tongue while he hands down a punishment or correction because I'm trying to let him have his say in the matter.

And then in private we discuss how we are mostly done with our job of raising her and we have moved to the role of gentle guidance. Where we are still enforcing rules but still loosing the reigns a bit. I also tell my dear sweetheart that our only power is prayer and that we need to be doing that continuously over our precious daughter.

The authors have once again put together a wonderful resource that will hopefully allow the Dad's of our families with daughters some peace by formulating prayers over every situation and circumstance in their lives. The book is complete with scriptures, prayers and even some time honored advice from other fathers. It is the best resource on prayer that I have seen in a long time.

Review: Minding Molly by:Leslie Gould

Minding Molly (The Courtships of Lancaster County, #3)
About the Book:
Capable and optimistic Molly Zook has a slight issue with control: She doesn't like giving it up. So she's chafing against her mother's wish that, to save the family farm, she marry Mervin Mosier--especially after she meets Leon Fisher. He's from Montana but is working in Molly's district, training horses at a nearby ranch. He is tall and muscular, with a confident demeanor. Molly has never met anyone like him, and he seems to feel the same about her.

Determined to let nothing get between them, Molly decides the best course of action is to get Mervin to fall back in love with her best friend, Hannah. Molly organizes a weekend camping trip hoping to bring them together, but things quickly go awry and it seems Leon and Hannah might be falling for each other instead. Will Molly keep struggling to control everyone and everything around her? Or will she learn to let God handle the twists and turns of her life?

About the Author:
Leslie Gould is the bestselling author of The Courtships of Lancaster County series and The Amish Midwife and The Amish Nanny, coauthored with Mindy Starns Clark. She holds an MFA in creative writing from Portland State University and has taught fiction writing at Multnomah University as an adjunct professor. She resides with her husband and four children in Portland, Oregon. Learn more at www.lesliegould.com.

My Review:
I am a HUGE fan of Leslie Gould as well as The Courtships of Lancaster County--Minding Molly is 3rd in the series. I think Minding Molly is by far my favorite. I was instantly drawn into the storyline and just fell in love with Molly. She does everything in her power to help her family even if that means  organizing their lives to suit her. I see a lot of myself in her.

Molly and her family just a few months prior lost their father. As a result things seem to be going well on the surface. Molly felt that she, her sister, and her Mom would all be fine with their current living circumstances but to be honest she didn't really know the extent of the financial state they were in. Molly was so focused on her current family situation that when Mervin approached her to allow him to take her to the singing, she didn't see it coming.

Her mother thinks this is great and works into her plan of having Molly marry to save the family farm but Molly is interested in someone else. So just when she thinks she has got everything all figured out in the love department God has other plans. Gods plans always reign supreme, but Molly tends to forget that. What will ever come of Mervin&Molly and this sweet family that is just trying to survive?

Litfuse Review: The Thief by:Stephanie Landsem

The Thief (The Living Water Series, #2)
About the Book:
My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?

Nissa is a Jewish woman with a sharp tongue and no hope of marriage. Abandoned by the God she once loved, her only recourse is to depend upon Mouse, the best thief in Jerusalem, to keep her blind brother, Cedron, fed and the landlord satisfied.

Longinus is a Roman centurion haunted by death and failure and is desperate to escape the accursed Judean province. Accepting a wager that will get him away from the aggravating Jews and their threats of revolt, he sets out to catch the thieves harassing the marketplace.

When a controversial teacher miraculously heals Cedron, Nissa hopes for freedom from her life of lies. But the supposed miracle brings only more misfortune, and Longinus, seeking to learn more about the mysterious healer, finds himself drawn instead to Nissa, whose secret will determine the course of both their futures.

Cedron, Longinus, and Nissa are unexpectedly caught up in the arrest, trial, and crucifixion of Jesus. As danger closes in on them from every side, they must decide if the love and redemption Jesus offers is true or just another false promise. How can the so-called Messiah save them from their shackles, when he cannot even save himself?

About the Author:
Stephanie Landsem writes historical fiction because she loves adventure in far-off times and places. In real life, she's explored ancient ruins, medieval castles, and majestic cathedrals around the world. Stephanie is equally happy at home in Minnesota with her husband, four children, and three fat cats. When she's not writing, she's feeding the ravenous horde, avoiding housework, and dreaming about her next adventure - whether it be in person or on the page.

My Review:
Nissa hates lying to everyone she cares for and even lying to herself. She doubts she will ever marry and is often punished for her sharp tongue. Knowing she has to find work, the only thing that runs through her mind, is the health of her dear blind brother, Cedron. With her father gambling and her mother drinking their money away, Nissa knows that its in her brothers best interest to find away for them to escape this horrid life. But what if that cause Nissa to be put in prison or even her life? But that's a chance Nissa is willing to take.

Longinus is a roman centurion that is still haunted by his past. Though he knows he should be grateful for his job, he can't help but want a change. All he can possibly do at this moment, is do his job, finding two thieves, the two thieves that humiliated him in the market place and still got away. And maybe if he finds them, he can have a transfer to a better place, a place that will give him the change he needs.

Cedron knows there is no way he can help his younger sister Nissa, out of that house. Being blind only adds to the problems he faces. All though he begs for money, it's still not enough, it's never enough. But when he hears of a miraculous teacher, Cedron knows it's time to get up and find him. Maybe with the help of this teacher, he can  finally get himself and his sister from their old life and begin anew. With God's help Cedron will find that teacher, but how?

Review: All Things Hidden by:Peterson/Woodhouse

All Things Hidden
About the Book:
Gwyn Hillerman loves being a nurse at her father's clinic on the beautiful Alaskan frontier. But family life has been rough ever since her mother left them, disdaining the uncivilized country and taking Gwyn's younger sister with her.

In Chicago, Dr. Jeremiah Vaughan finds his life suddenly turned upside down when his medical license is stripped away after an affluent patient dies. In a snowball effect, his fiance breaks their engagement. In an attempt to bury the past, Jeremiah accepts Dr. Hillerman's invitation to join his growing practice in the isolated Alaska Territory.

Gwyn and Jeremiah soon recognize a growing attraction to each other. But when rumors of Jeremiah's past begin to surface, they'll need more than love to face the threat of an uncertain future.

She lives, writes, and homeschools with her husband of twenty-plus years and their two awesome teens in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Connect with Kim at www.kimberleywoodhouse.com.

My Review:
Living in the Alaska territory is anything but heart warming to Gwyn Hillerman. She and her father are there because Gwyn's father has a medical practice and she is his assistant. But being out there with virtually no life but caring for others is just so lonely. She enjoys the landscape there, but it still doesn't make up for the lack of people to visit with.

This book takes us into what it was like for many families struggling during the Depression and just how much that a faith in God could get through even the simplest of times. Dr. Jeremiah Vaughan has decided to take Dr. Hillerman up on his request to move to Alaska territory and help him with his growing medical practice. Since Dr. Vaughan's life has suddenly became clear, thanks to the undoing of his now ex-fiancé and a patient of his passes away, he decides to make a change.

Soon after his arrival, things start to change between the two of them, but after his past starts to surface, will this be their undoing? Or will God see to it that they remain together?

CFBA Review: The Ether:Vero Rising by:Laurice E. Molinari

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
The Ether: Vero Rising
Zonderkidz (February 4, 2014)
by
Laurice E. Molinari

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Laurice Elehwany Molinari, a veteran film and TV writer in Hollywood for over two decades, has penned over thirty scripts for various studios and networks. Her very first feature script, written while a fellow at the American Film Institute, became Columbia Picture’s critically acclaimed children’s classic, My Girl. She went on to pen The Brady Bunch Movie and The Amazing Panda Adventure. Laurice lives with her husband and two children in Los Angeles, the City of Angels, where her lifelong love for our heavenly guardians inspired her to write a book about them in the ETHER series.

ABOUT THE BOOK

The Fiercest of Warriors? Vero Leland always suspected he was different from others his own age, ever since his childhood attempts to fly. But he never could have predicted the truth---or how much his life was about to change. Soon after his twelfth birthday, Vero learns he is a guardian angel and is abruptly transported to the Ether, the spiritual realm that surrounds the earth. Yet before he can be counted among these fierce warriors, Vero must learn to master his growing powers, competing with other angels-in- training and battling demonic creatures known as maltures as well as mythical creatures such as the leviathan. Until his instruction is complete, Vero needs to alternate between the Ether and his regular life. If he survives training and accepts his destiny---a destiny he did not choose---he must leave everything behind, including his family and the life he loves. Meanwhile, an evil is growing---the maltures are rising, and Vero appears to be their target.

Enjoy the book trailer:

If you'd like to read the first chapter of The Ether: Vero Rising, go HERE.

My Review:
Vero had always tried to fly ever since he was little. Though each time he jumped from the window or off the table, he always hit the ground. He had tried jumping from many things but never could make it into flight. When he finally sparked the idea of jumping from the roof, he grew with excitement. Coming close to the ground, Vero is grabbed by a man in a red suit. Vero immediately thinks its Santa to the rescue but come to find out this man is far from being like Santa. This person can fly, which was just amazing in its self.

The Ether:Vero Rising, is a page turner of a book. Sometimes I couldn't believe what I was seeing on the pages and would have to reread it. This book is perfect for teens, my sixteen year old has started reading it and wholeheartedly agrees. This one is definitely a winner!

Besides, he s been trying to get to know her better and he d like to be seeing her during those few nights a week she spends with her quilting guild. Then one afternoon Tess and Logan visit her aunt in the nursing home, and the woman acts agitated when Tess covers her with the story quilt. Aunt Susan is attempting to communicate a message to them about Tess s uncle. There s a story behind this quilt, they realize, one that may lead them to a serial killer. My Review:
Follow along as Tess the leading character in Scraps of Evidence, suddenly gets a promotion at her place of work. She is promoted to detective and is on the cuspid of getting a new partner when her Aunt Susan lands herself in the hospital sporting injuries similar to those that a battered woman may receive. But when Tess questions her about it, she dismisses it saying that she tripped over the cat. Logan is a new, good-looking guy looking for a fresh start and this is what leads him to Florida, or is it? He is somewhat of a mystery to everyone, at least in the beginning.

Soon things start to heat up when Tess and Logan are sent to investigate a homicide that looks alot like the murder of Tess's friend some years earlier, could this be the break in the case that Tess has been searching for this whole time? Tess and her Aunt Susan are very much involved in the hobby of quilt making and they enjoy it immensely. There is a quilt that the two of them often talk about and Tess soon learns that there is more behind the origins of this quilt than once realized.

Review: Pups of the Spirit by:Gorey/Holler

Pups of the Spirit
About the Book:
'God gave each puppy a gift of its own, and PUPS OF THE SPIRIT is how they are known!' Peanut is patient, and Kay is so kind. Each of these nine loveable puppies has a special trait to help them grow closer to God. From love and joy to patience and kindness, children will have fun learning about the fruits of the spirit with these playful and cuddly companions.

There are 9 in all and each one of us have a sprinkling of most of them. These sweet little puppies each have that special trait God meant for them and them alone. This would be a very easy way to teach our children all about them.

The Fruits of the Spirit are:
Joy

Gentleness
Patience
Faithfulness
Love
Goodness

The illustrations in this book are drawn perfectly to represent each of the fruits. A sweet, fun loving book just perfect for some reading time with that special little one in your life.

Review: Your Guide To Living Life Out Loud by:Dave Bell

Your Guide to Living Life Out Loud
About the Book:
Life. A journey? A rollercoaster? A box of chocolates?

Whatever your experience, there’s no doubt that it doesn’t come equipped with a step-by-step manual or an instant answer to each daily question. That’s where this book comes in. Having faced some of life’s most daunting issues at an early age, Dave Bell reflects on his path so far and shares some practical insights that will help you plot your own course as you navigate your own unchartered territory. Focusing on the simple truth of God’s Word, this real, honest life-story invites us to take a deep breath, look ahead and begin to live every day to the full.

About the Author:
DAVE BELL is a musician, singer-songwriter, worship leader and author. He is based at New Life Church in Lincoln and frequently involved in The One Event, but his ministry takes him all over the world, often leading worship with his band THE MOMENT. Dave is married to Sarah and they have two young sons, Jackson and Levi.

My Review:
Based upon his experience with a life threatening cancer, Dave Bell has written what its like to be faced with something so horrific that you doubt you will ever survive. Then he shows us how you will with God as the captain of your situation turn it out for His glory. He takes our circumstances and shows us how we are to treat it and how we are to overcome it. By speaking words of affirmation and putting trust in Him we are sure to overcome anything that seems unsurmountable to our earthly eyes. It's not Gods way to simply turn and run, we as His children are to face it head on with Him in the lead.

Mr. Bell takes his experience and inspires us to meeting those challenges head on and strong all for God's glory. At the end of each chapter there is a Life Out Loud Guide with these challenges and helps: Think out Loud, Read Out Loud, Pray Out Loud, and Live Out Loud.

Review: The Secret Underground by:Natalie Bahm

The Secret Underground
About the Book:
Twelve-year-old Ally is the only witness to a bank robbery in her small town. Unable to block out the memory of the robbers, a notorious gang known as the Gauze Men, Ally joins her little brother and a bunch of neighborhood boys digging a hole in her backyard.

Only the hole isn't just a hole - it's a massive set of tunnels snaking beneath the neighborhood and heading for an abandoned steel mill. Ally is old enough to know the danger, but she reasons spending time with sixth-grade heartthrob Paul is more fun than sitting at home with her worries. And dangerous it is - none of the kids' parents realize the tunnels exist, but the Gauze Men might.

100% of proceeds from this book will be donated to help a baby boy named Jayden, and contribute toward his family's massive medical expenses. Jayden suffers from a combination of congenital problems including Hirschsprung's disease.

About the Author:
Natalie Bahm has four very little children and one normal-sized husband. When she's not changing diapers, scrubbing toilets, picking up toys, making food, or cleaning dog vomit off the carpet, you might find her writing stories.

My Review:
Twelve year Ally just wants to go to the movies with her best friend, Gracie, but her mom sends her little brother with her. Ally was already not too thrilled with that idea when her little brother, Eric decides to run after a sound he heard shortly after the movie. So of course Ally has to run after him and the things they see after that seem to change their lives forever. The local bank that is right down the block from the movie theater gets robbed and Ally along with her brother see the bank robbers.

After all the commotion starts to die down Eric goes along with life as usual, but poor Ally struggles with the somewhat traumatic incident. Ally soon starts to barricade herself in her home not wanting to get out and do things. But her brother he starts digging a hole in the back yard and won't stop. To everyone's amazement even Ally's, they soon learn he is on to something and this something is going to lead to something big.

Bible Stories for His Beautiful Princess
About the Book:
Best-selling author Sheri Rose Shepherd uses charming princess characters and easy-to-understand Bible stories to help share spiritual wisdom and truths in this sweetly illustrated Bible storybook. This is a wonderful introduction to the Bible for even the tiniest of princesses! "Bible Stories for His Beautiful Princess" is a fresh way to teach little girls--toddlers and preschoolers--the foundations of the Christian faith. Simple lessons on how to know God, learning to pray, having faith, and understanding right from wrong make this the perfect first Bible. About the Author:
Sheri Rose has a very refreshing way of bringing the Word of God to life. She knows how to renew the Eternal Hope in our hearts. Her speaking style is humorous, heartwarming and inspires every one to make their life count for eternity.

My Review:
Bible Stories for His Princess, is just a precious collection of Bible verses selected especially for the "little princesses" in our lives. Used in a very girlie fashion the author Sheri Rose Shepherd, captures the uniqueness of a young princess in her latest work. To even show the youngest princess their worth in their Fathers eyes.

Complete with a Bible verse and explanation, prayer and a final thought this book gives the little girls in our lives the perfect tool to build their confidence in Him. There are over thirty Bible stories and many Bible references to fill their hungry hearts. All wording uses the NLT version of the Bible and all passages are precise, clear and very easy to understand even for girls around the ages of 3-6.

CFBA Review: A Sky Without Stars by:Linda S. Clare

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
A Sky Without Stars
Abingdon Press (February 18, 2014)
by
Linda S. Clare
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Linda S. Clare is an award-winning author and coauthor of several books and has also published many essays, stories, and poems in publications, including The Christian Reader, The Denver Post, and The Philadelphia Inquirer. Her most recent book is A Sky without Stars, the newest release in Abingdon’s Quilts of Love line. Born in Arizona, Linda and her husband now make their home in Eugene, Oregon, where Linda has taught college-level creative writing classes, and writes, edits, and mentors other writers. She also is a frequent writing conference presenter, a church retreat leader, and mom to four grown children and five wayward cats.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Frankie Chasing Bear is caught between cultures. She wants to raise her son Harold to revere his Lakota heritage, but she also thinks he will need to learn the white man’s ways to succeed. After the untimely death of her husband, Frankie joins the U.S. Government’s Relocation Program and moves to Arizona. There she begins sewing a Lakota Star pattern quilt for Harold with tribal wisdom sung, sewn, and prayed into it. A bed without a quilt is like a sky without stars, but neither the quilt—nor her new life—comes easily to Frankie. Nick Vandergriff, for instance, is the last man Frankie wants to trust. He’s half-Lakota but Christian, and Frankie can see no good coming from that faith after her own parents were forced to convert at an Indian school. Can Nick convince Frankie that white men and Christians aren’t all bad? And will Frankie learn that love is the most important ingredient—for her son’s quilt and life itself?

If you would like to read the first chapter of A Sky Without Stars, go HERE.

My Review:
A book based on family but also based on hate. The characters in the book find themselves stuck between two worlds. Two worlds;  one being the white mans world and the other being the world of the Lakota Indian tribe. Frankie's grandmother passed on the art and family tradition of quilting and made her promise should would carry it on and pass it down to the next generation. Frankie meant well when she agreed to the promise but her son is not really all that interested in quilt making and frankly, he doesn't understand why you would need a quilt when they live in Arizona.

Frankie and Harold are trying to rebuild their lives in an alternate location when she starts quilting to make her feel better. Life in the 1950's shouldn't be this hard for Native Americans, should it? But it is a hard life, they are definitely racial intentions and slurs directed their way but with God's help, they plan to succeed.

My Review:
V'sair sits among his tutor once again listening to the history of his ancestors. He thinks of all the good things he could be doing, things that could  help his people. But he has to listen to what both his parents say, and study up on the things that happened long ago. When he hears of the Fireblade, it sparks the thought of adventure in his great mind. But as he tells his parents, they tell him of the dangers and how they will forbid him from leaving the palace. Even though he feels he should follow his parents rules, something in him wants to fined the Fireblade. Though he needs to take heed to his parents warnings, he heads out into the great unknown to find the Fireblade.

Reminda hates to know her son, feels useless, and less of a man. She is willing to help him with anything his heart desires but finding the Fireblade. Her son scares her with the ways he acts, and she is often worried he will do something stupid. But then again she thinks it would be good for him to go on an adventure, to take time by himself and do something good. But she is frightened her son will travel to find the Fireblade, and she will never see them again.

Review: After Lament by:Glenn Pemberton

After Lament: Psalms for Learning to Trust Again
About the Book:
Just as the Book of Psalms provides the words we need for lament (expressing our grief and hurt to God), the Psalter also provides the guidance and language we need for negotiating the time after lament (learning to trust and give thanks).

About the Author:
GLENN PEMBERTON teaches Old Testament at Abilene Christian University, including a popular undergraduate course on Israel's wisdom and devotional literature. Glenn has been a preacher among churches for over twenty years. He earned his PhD from the University of Denver and the Iliff School of Theology, and has published various essays on Proverbs and is author of Hurting with God (ACU Press, 2012) and When God Calls: Will You Trust Me Now? Glenn and his wife Dana live in Abilene, Texas.

My Review:
This book really moved me. I would say probably more than any other book I have ever read, and I have read a lot of books. The author takes many stories from the Bible and makes you really question how you would feel in that certain situation. He didn't really change anything I thought about any of the stories he presented but he did add some richness to what I had already known and believed.

For example, I had always wondered how Isaac may of felt after the famous event on Mt. Moriah or maybe what eventually happened to Job after all of his family and possessions were restored, did he ever grieve for what he had lost? And did Isaac forever distrust his father and maybe even God for that event? I have always said I would love to learn more about these people but the Bible only shows us glimpses into their lives.

After Lament, is a book that is a little bit different. It is a book that shows us what to do after the storm is over and we are left with the scares. Sometimes those wounds are so deep that it is a true question to even know how we will ever find our way back to Him. What do we do when God doesn't answer our prayers? This book is a good book to get you going in the right direction.

Review: Ziggersnout by:Dale Rensing

Ziggersnout
About the Book:
A picture book for early readers (ages 5-8). A story of a little boy learning to skate who, with the help of his friends, finds the drive within himself to persevere even when things get tough.

About the Author:
Dale Rensing has been a technical and marketing writer for many years, working in the high-tech industry and then eventually moving over to businesses involving history and fashion. Her first children’s historical novel, Jewel of the Opera Garnier, was originally published by Lakshmi Books in October 2012. Dale draws upon her many years of dance and skating experience to give readers a sense of the joy and dedication involved in these disciplines.

My Review:
Ziggersnout is a sweet children's story centered around this little boy that needs to gain better confidence on the ice in order to improve his abilities on his hockey team. Gramps, the caretaker of the rink tells Eric that he can give him some pointers on his delivery. But after Gramps gets done scraping the ice one day, Eric notices something under the ice--something that looks a lot like a dragon.

And so the dragon called Ziggersnout, was born that day in the eyes of Eric this little boy that so desperately need a strong confidence boost. The mere presence of this delightful dragon gave Eric the confidence his game needed. Before long Eric zipping around on the ice like never before.

A practicing speed skater at the rink one day informs Eric of many things he knew nothing about concerning water dragons. He tells Eric that every rink has a dragon and goes on to tell him what they are all about. This children's book is perfect for helping a child realize that he needs to nurture the confidence yet realized inside himself.

About the Authors:

Carolyn Reeves is especially skilled at creating ways to help students develop a greater understanding of not just scientific concepts, but also how these are applied within the world around us. Carolyn retired after a 30-year career as a science teacher, finished a doctoral degree in science education, and began a new venture as a writer and an educational consultant. She and her husband make their home in Oxford, Mississippi, where they are active members of North Oxford Baptist Church. The Reeves have three children, three in-law children, and ten grandchildren.

My Review:
The Water&Weather: From Flood to Forecasts is an excellent book filled with tons of hands on learning for your children that are studying general science. Perfect for elementary school aged children, grades 3-6, the Water&Weather: From Flood to Forecasts is filled with short science lessons with a science experiment used to demonstrate the learned activity.

This is one of many in the Investigate the Possibilities Series published by Master Books, the expert behind creation science. You can find out more about the rest of the series here. And you will find more information on Master Books at this link.

I teach both of my older boys together when it comes to science. My 8 year old is in third grade and my 11 year old is in fifth grade. We sat together for the read aloud of the lesson and my oldest child aged 16 worked the experiment with my two boys because I do not enjoy science as much as the three of them do. They found the experiments easy to do and it was very easy to find the items needed for the experiments because they are usual common household items.

The lessons in the book are short and to the point. The lessons include observation, things to think about, then review questions at the end of each section to further your children's learning on the lesson material. This book is available for purchase at this link and is $12.99 (paperback), there is also a student journal and teacher guide available as well.

Litfuse Review: Where Courage Calls by:Oke/Logan

Where Courage Calls: A When Calls the Heart Novel
About the Book:
Her courage and her heart will be tested in ways she never expected...
Beth Thatcher has spent her entire life in the safe, comfortable world of her family, her friends, and the social outings her father's wealth provides. But Beth is about to leave it all behind to accept a teaching position in the rugged foothills of western Canada. Inspired by her aunt Elizabeth, who went west to teach school several years ago, and gently encouraged by her father, Beth resolves to put her trust in God and bravely face any challenge that comes her way.
But the conditions in Coal Valley are even worse than she'd feared. A recent mining accident has left the town grieving and at the mercy of the mining company. The children have had very little prior education, and many of the locals don't even speak English. There isn't even a proper schoolhouse. In addition, Beth's heart is torn between two young men--both Mounties, one a lifelong friend and the other a kind, quiet man who comes to her aid more than once.
Despite the many challenges, Beth is determined to make a difference in the rustic frontier town. But when her sister visits from the East, reminding her of all the luxuries she's had to give up, will Beth decide to return to her privileged life as soon as the school year is over?

A special companion story to Hallmark Channel's "When Calls the Heart" TV series

About the Authors:
Celebrated for her significant contribution to the Christian book industry, Janette Oke is the recipient of the 1992 ECPA President's Award, the 1999 CBA Life Impact Award, the Gold Medallion, and the Christy Award. Her novels have sold more than 30 million copies and are beloved by readers around the world. Janette lives with her husband, Edward, in Alberta, Canada.

Laurel Oke Logan, daughter of Edward and Janette Oke, is the author of Janette Oke: A Heart for the Prairie, as well as the novel Dana's Valley, which she co-wrote with her mom. Laurel and her husband have six children and two sons-in-law and live near Indianapolis, Indiana.

My Review:
Beth Thatcher has never traveled much in her life. But when the opportunity comes up for her to travel to and teach children  whose fathers are working in the mines, she decides she will go. The job will only last a year so its not too long to be away from family. After all her Aunt Elizabeth did something very similar and that inspired her to spur on and make her family proud. Bravely she takes this on and with Gods help it is sure to succeed.

But even as smart as Beth is, when she meets two great guys she feels so completely torn and then to further complicate things, her sister comes to visit and this leads to Beth being incredibly homesick. It is so funny reading tis book at this time in my life because I'm about to send me daughter off into the world to go away to school. As I have tried to explain to my daughter, sometimes life happens and the plans you expected for your life take a drastic turn. And you suddenly realize the change that God had planned is way better than what you had planned.

I don't think Beth, the main character had her life planned the way it ended up but life is funny like that sometimes.

Litfuse Review: The A-Z of C.S. Lewis by:Colin Duriez

The A-Z of C S Lewis
About the Book:
Published to coincide with the 50th anniversary of C. S. Lewis's death, this complete guide covers all of Lewis' works, from his literary criticism to Narnia.

C. S. Lewis's work is widely known and regarded, but enthusiasts are often only aware of one part of his work—his children's stories and his popular theology; and yet he wrote so much more, including science fiction and literary criticism. This volume brings together all aspects of C S Lewis's life
and thought. Arranged in alphabetical order, it begins with The Abolition of Man—written in 1943 and described as "almost my favorite"—to Wormwood, a character in The Screwtape Letters. This book will delight anyone who is interested in C. S. Lewis and wants to learn more about him, his thought, his works, and his life.

About the Author:
Colin Duriez is a widely respected authority on Tolkien and a regular speaker at Tolkien conferences. He is the author of The C. S. Lewis Encyclopedia, A Field Guide to Narnia, The Inklings Handbook, and Tolkien and C. S. Lewis: The Gift of Friendship, among others.

My Review:
First of all, WOW! The author truly outdid himself. This is a very thorough, authoritative writing on the life of C.S. Lewis and his beloved writings. If you want to learn more about the man, the myth, the legend than this book is truly one for all that and more.

I have reviewed only one book on C. S. Lewis and it was a children's book, so I knew very little about him. But knowing that he rejected Christ at some point in his life seem to be enough, but that couldn't be further from the truth.

The author helps us break down his writings so that they are easier to understand, but understanding his writings is just the tip of the iceberg, you learn even more about the man behind it all.

Litfuse Review: Princess Ever After by:Rachel Hauck

Princess Ever After
About the Book:
Regina Beswick never dreamed of faraway places. She’s happy with her life as a classic car mechanic and owner of a restoration shop.

But an unexpected visitor and the discovery of a fairytale, drawn by her great-grandma, causes Regina to wonder if she might be destined for something more.

Tanner Burkhardt, Minister of Culture for the Grand Duchy of Hessenberg, must convince the strong-willed Southerner, Miss Beswick, that she is his country’s long-lost princess. Failure could destroy his reputation and change his nation forever.

As Regina and Tanner face the challenges before them, neither are prepared for love to invade their hearts and change every thing they believe about themselves.

However, when a royal opponent nearly destroys Regina’s future, she must lean into God and trust He has sovereignly brought her to her true and final destiny.

About the Author:
RITA Finalist and Carol Award winner Rachel Hauck was recently chosen by Family Fiction readers as one of the top five romance authors in CBA. She has written more than fifteen novels, including the acclaimed Songbird novels with multi-platinum country singer Sara Evans. Rachel lives in central Florida with her husband, and writes from her ivory tower (her office really is in a tower, and it's painted ivory!).

My Review:
Regina loves to be hands deep in oil doing the one thing she loves, restoring classic cars. Thats the only thing she wants to do until she dies, but her best friend, Mark has other ideas. He doesn't like the idea of her beautiful self doing something made for men to do. She's not only smart and beautiful but she also has a way with people. Mark thinks the would make a great power couple, but Reg has other ideas. Why doesn't he understand that to her he is just a friend and she loves to work on cars? What's so hard about that?

Tanner must find the long-lost and last princess. And he can't fail, his nation counts on it. But upon arriving at this princess's home, he finds something that would be anything but princess material. Though she had breath-taking beauty, she likes to be under a car changing the oil. What will she do when she's in a royal gown? She surely can't do that. Tanner must stay strong through the accusations of this being a prank. He must bring Regina to the palace, even if she is kicking and screaming, if not to honor the king, but for the nation.

Review: Be Bolder Growin' Older by:Bruce Leiter

Be Bolder Growin Older
About the Book:
Prepare for the struggles of growing older through God's gift of boldness in life. Discover Jesus' victory to endure and flourish as you grow older. Overcome the ten temptations and evil influences of growing older.

My Review:
Have you ever heard the expression, you can't teach a old dog new tricks? Well I don't know how true that is about dogs but it is most definitely true about people especially as we grow older. As we grow older it is extremely hard to change our behaviors or even our circumstances. Even in our spiritual walk it can be hard to change the way we think or feel. We can not grow and mature without listening and doing what God calls us to do. And therefore no fruit will continue to produce so it's imperative to be willing to change.

Be Bolder Growin' Older is a devotional that can be used to change all of that and more. The author has taken the task of growing older and given us a way to learn from it. Complete with daily lessons, discussion questions, and prayers designed to help you on this journey.

“She isn't real. . . right?”

A lonely wife and a frustrated husband create virtual online friends, trying to deal with the pressures of a marriage gone flat, and a high-pressure job.

Torn between his love for his wife, and the perfection of his virtual girlfriend, he becomes unfaithful.

Christian suspense at its best!

He teaches an adult Sunday school class and enjoys writing and driving his 1949 Packard automobile. John lives near Indianapolis with his wife, Beth, and their daughter.

My Review:
Rachel's marriage seems to be on the brink of disaster. She felt alone and left out, her only friend had died just a few years prior. But when it seems all is lost she finds a website just for people who feel like her, a website where you can create virtual friends and interact with them just as you would a real person. When Rachel created her friend all over again on this website, she didn't know she would become so attached, that this virtual friend would come to be a real friend to her. As she soon begins to come out of her depression, she shows her husband this website. But that is just another problem in it's self.

Scott and Rachel have became farther and father apart as a couple. Scott finds this site Rachel shows him intriguing and sets up his own virtual friend. But he doesn't know that this friend would become so real to him, one that he would rather spend his time with. What will his wife think? How does God feel about this? These thoughts have crossed his mind but he just keeps brushing them away.

Litfuse Review: The Sinners Garden by:William Sirls

The Sinners' Garden
About the Book:
In a small town where hope and tragedy intermingle, things—and people—are not always what they seem.
Andy Kemp has suffered most of his life from both physical and emotional scars, and he believes that the scars on his face are proof that God doesn’t love him. Andy has grown into a withdrawn teenager, keeping to himself, until his uncle, ex-con Gerald Ripley, shows up and wants to be a mentor to Andy. Rip has turned his life around and wants to do everything he can to help mend Andy’s pain and the rift in his relationship with his sister.
Meanwhile, police officer Heather Gerisch responds to a late-night breaking and entering episode in one of the poorest homes in town. The masked man makes the sign of the cross, escapes, and Heather soon realizes that he has left $5,000 in gift cards to a local grocery store. As the bizarre break-ins continue and Heather pursues the elusive “Summer Santa,” Andy begins to hear strange and beautiful music, and Rip is convinced that he is hearing the voice of God.
As the lives and stories of the townspeople of Benning Township intertwine, extraordinary circumstances emerge and long-kept secrets are revealed.

About the Author:
Once a senior vice president in a large investment firm, William Sirls was incarcerated in 2007 for wire fraud and money laundering. Life lessons involving faith, grace, and forgiveness are evident in his writing. The Sinners’ Garden is his second novel. His first novel, The Reason, was published in 2012. William makes his home in southern Michigan and you can reach him at WilliamSirls.com.

My Review:
Heather receives a call one night on patrol, telling her that a house of a nice poor woman and her kids was broken into. She heads to the scene, as fog starts to settle over the ground. When she arrives, she finds the family standing out in the yard. They all seemed scared even herself, but she had to be brave and find out where this guy was. Stepping in she finds no sign of this  intruder, that is until she hears him step behind her.

She tells him to drop his weapon only to find it didn't sound quite as loud as a gun. But instead of him waiting with his hands up as commanded he walks straight out the door leaving her astonished. After the man left Heather and the poor woman search the house to make sure he didn't take a thing but instead he left them many things. Who would have done such a thing?

Andy was left scared mentally and physically after many years of abuse from his father. Now he has a hard time trusting the people who really love him. When his uncle buys him an amazing present for his birthday, Andy is over joyed even if he doesn't show it. While they are trying out his new present, Andy and his uncle come across an amazing garden full of beautiful flowers. Though the flowers were amazing, the question still stands, who planted this garden?

My Review:
Shannon is a 16 year old girl with a plan for her summer vacation. She and her best friend Merenda discuss it on the last day of school as they ride home on the bus. First part of her plan is to get her drivers license and the second part is to get a job. But as soon as Shannon gets home that day from school it seems that her neighbor Mrs. Wimple lets her in on the "real" plan for her summer. Shannon and Mrs. Wimple have been caring for Shannon's ailing mother for sometime now. So the very kindly neighbor along with Shannon's mother Anna have devised a plan that involves Shannon and her mom to stay with family about 5 hours away in Hochstetler in Ohio.

Shannon feels like she is the parent in this situation and she wants her freedom. She even reasons with herself at maybe just placing her mom on the bus to leave and she, Shannon continuing on with her plan for the summer. But she soon realizes that that is not the best way to be, her mother needs her. Shannon soon finds out some family secrets about her mom. She even thinks she will have trouble adjusting to this kind of life, but soon some one crosses her path that could change her mind about the situation.

Review: The Dream Dress by:Janice Thompson

The Dream Dress (Weddings by Design #3)
About the Book:
A seamstress at a swanky bridal boutique, Gabi Delgado dreams of doing more than ripping out seams and fitting dresses to doe-eyed brides. She wants to see her own dress designs gracing the young women of Texas. When Jordan Spencer, the editor of Texas Bride magazine visits the shop to do a feature, Gabi is devastated to lose her job in his very influential presence. Convinced she'll never get her dreams off the ground now, Gabi needs lots of encouragement--especially from her friend Bella Neeley--to take a chance and start her business. And as she gets to know Jordan, she discovers that she may have to take a chance on love as well. Could it be that she'll have to design her own wedding dress soon?

About the Author:
Janice Thompson is a seasoned romance author and screenwriter. An expert at pulling the humor from the situations we get ourselves into, Thompson offers an inside look at the wedding business, drawing on her own experiences as a wedding planner. She is the author of the hugely popular Weddings by Bella series and the Backstage Pass series, as well as Picture Perfect and The Icing on the Cake. She lives in Texas. Visit www.janiceathompson.com for more information.

My Review:
Gabi's dream is to design her own dresses, but that is not what chosen job is at the moment. She works for a well-known designer, who usually pushes her to the brink of insanity. But with the news of a reporter coming, everyone is running around like crazy, all accept Gabi. She does help and usually helps to design the dresses but what does she care if a reporter is coming to write a story on her boss and not her. Well, that is how she felt until she laid her eyes on this man who looked as if he could be related to Prince William. After she seen him it was like she didn't remember his name, her name, or what she was suppose to be doing.

Jordan likes working as a reporter, but not a reporter for weddings. How does a guy like him, have what it takes to report that? But if denying this opportunity means the lost of his paycheck then he will gladly write about weddings. Upon arriving at a famous designers store, he is surrounded by talk of weddings and proposals. But the one thing that caught him by surprise is the beauty of one of the employees, and after talking to a friend of hers, he finds out that her ultimate dream is to be a designer but hasn't had a chance to start out on her own. What could be stopping someone like her?
