Irish immigrant James O’Leary has spent his life building Irish Meadows into a thriving horse farm and is not about to let hard economic times threaten its success. He intends for his daughters to marry prosperous men–ones who will secure the family’s rightful place in society, and at the same time, guarantee the future of Irish Meadows. Both girls, however, have different visions for their futures.
Brianna and Colleen O’Leary know their father expects them to marry well. Yet despite his wishes, Brianna, the quieter sister, dreams of attending college. Vivacious Colleen, meanwhile, is happy to marry–as long as her father’s choice meets her exacting standards. When stable hand Gilbert Whelan returns from college and distant family member Rylan Montgomery stops in on his way to the seminary in Boston, the two men quickly complicate everyone’s plans. It will take every ounce of courage for both sisters to follow their hearts. And even if they do, will they inevitably find their dreams too distant to reach?
My Review:
Brianna O'Leary is constantly gone unnoticed, by both her father and men in general. So when Gilbert Whelan comes home, Brianna is determined to find out if he cares for her at all. Especially in comparison to her sister. Although for the summer that’s her goal, Brianna has something else in mind, if only she can get her father to accept it. She wishes for nothing more than to go to college. And with Gil’s help, she plans to do just that.
Colleen O'Leary likes to flirt, and boy does she do a lot of it. With her gaze set on Gil, she isn’t going to let anyone stand in her way, especially her sister. Or that’s the way she felt until she meet’s Rylan Montgomery, a handsome distant cousin, who’s heart belongs to becoming a priest. Although she wishes to believe he has the same feelings, Colleen harbors a secret that causes her to ask why anyone would even care.
Gilbert Whelan was raised with the O’Leary kids. He’s seen them at their best and their worst. But coming home, to Irish Meadows, after finally finishing his college studies, Gil find’s a lot of things have changed. Especially Brianna’s looks and his feelings towards her. With the love they share, he’s bound and determined to ask Brianna’s father for her hand, if only he’ll agree.
Rylan Montgomery planned only to stay at Irish Meadows, while he does his seminary training. But after laying eyes on Colleen, he finds himself questioning his whole out look on becoming a priest. Having promised his mother he would go into ministry, Rylan is unsure whether or not he should follow his heart or keep his promise.
Irish Meadows is book one in the Courage To Dream series. I loved this book! With this being Susan Anne Mason’s first book, I’m certain she’ll have many more good stories to come. And I can’t wait to read them all!
