About the Book:
DNA Test Unlocks a Family Mystery
Sephardic Jew Mathilda Nissim watches in horror as the
Germans invade her beloved city of Salonika, Greece. What angers her
most is the lack of resistance her people put up to their captors. In
secret and at great risk to her life, she continues to publish her
newspaper, calling her people to action. She doesn’t trust God to help
them. When she and her husband find out they are expecting a child,
Mathilda may have to resort to desperate measures to ensure her
daughter’s survival.
Three generations later, college student
Riley Payson and her cousin take a popular DNA test only to discover
they don’t share any common ancestors. In fact, the test shows Riley is a
Sephardic Jew from Greece. This revelation shakes Riley’s tenuous faith
and sends her on a journey to discover what happened to her
great-grandmother and how all this relates to her faith and her life
today.
My Review:
What I would Tell you, is a dual timeline type novel. We have Mathilda's point of view and Riley's point of view. Mathilda had to go to some pretty daring lengths to save her child's life after the German's invaded her town. She was already a very outspoken critic of the war and this made for an easy target. She hated the fact that her people were not gutsy enough to face the opposition. Sh she did something that would change their lives forever.
Riley on the other hand is taken by surprise when she learns of her ancestry. And off to Greece she goes and an adventure--to say the least. Riley must learn many hard truths along the way that makes her question a lot of things. But in the end she comes to realize a lot and it all comes full circle.
