Litfuse Review: The Beautiful Pretender by:Melanie Dickerson
About the Book:
What happens when a margrave realizes he’s fallen in love with a servant?
The Margrave of Thornbeck has to find a bride, fast. He invites ten noble-born ladies from around the country to be his guests at Thornbeck Castle for two weeks, a time to test these ladies and reveal their true character.
Avelina is only responsible for two things: making sure her deception goes undetected and avoiding being selected as the margrave’s bride. Since the latter seems unlikely, she concentrates on not getting caught. No one must know she is merely a maidservant, sent by the Earl of Plimmwald to stand in for his daughter, Dorothea.
Despite Avelina’s best attempts at diverting attention from herself, the margrave has taken notice. And try as she might, she can’t deny her own growing feelings. But something else is afoot in the castle. Something sinister that could have far worse—far deadlier—consequences. Will Avelina be able to stop the evil plot? And at what cost?
My Review:
When the Margrave of Thornbeck, Lord Reinhart Thornbeck, receives a letter for the king, he is quite surprise. The letter states that he must invite ten noble born ladies, chosen by the king, to Thornbeck Castle for two weeks. And during those two weeks he must decide which of the ladies should become his bride. Despite the absurdity of it all, Reinhart does as he is told, but he decides to put a few of his own little test into play. Who said he couldn’t find out the true heart of each of the ladies before he chooses.
Avelina is nothing more than the Earl of Plimmwald’s daughter, Dorothea’s maidservant. Although she knows she must be happy with her job, she can’t help but wish to one day marry. With a crippled father and two siblings she must help care for, she has excepted the fact that she will probably never marry, due to not having a dowry. But things change when Avelina is sent to Thornbeck Castle posing as Lady Dorothea. Her job is to keep her true identity a secret and not marry the Margrave, but make sure that they have a good alliance with Lord Thornbeck.
Try as she might, Avelina can’t deter the Margrave’s attention. And she, herself cant stop her own feelings. But something is amiss in the castle, and they only way to survive is to work together even if the future is unclear.
The Beautiful Pretender is book two in The Medieval Fairy tale series. I really enjoyed this book, it was full of adventure and action. I love medieval stories and this one is going to definitely be added to my favorites. I love Melanie Dickerson’s books and I can’t wait to see what happens next in this series.
**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from the author.
