Review: Discovering Delight by:Glenda Mathes

Discovering Delight: 31 Meditations on Loving God's Law
About the Book:
Does the concept of loving law sound strange to you like two things that just don't go together? Christians today often don't want to read about law because they would rather revel in gospel and grace. Yet the Bible clearly links law with love, a connection we see in Psalm 119. In these insightful meditations, author Glenda Mathes sheds light on this 'long psalm that often gets short shrift.' A closer look at Psalm 119, in particular, and several other psalms and Old and New Testament passages encourages readers to discover the delight of God's written Word and rejoice in loving His law.

About the Author:
Glenda Mathes is an author and editor who lives with her husband near Pella, Iowa. They have four adult children, two of whom are married, and five grandsons.

My Review:
I personally love devotionals. But sometimes they are just not meaty enough for me. Discovering Delight is the author's own commentary on portions of the 119th Psalm, the longest Psalm in the Bible. Though a lot of her commentary is derived from this psalm she also uses other scripture as well. I loved her Biblical feedback on subject revolving around God's loving law. Lately, I have been feeling a little 'out of the loop" with my church family. And I was instantly drawn to the 13th meditation entitled Christian Community. In this meditation, the author conveys her thoughts and feelings on the fact that we are to still embrace our brothers and sisters in Christ, no matter how we feel at the moment.

I can personally attest to this concept as being a very difficult one and it is something that God and I are constantly talking about. Many times He has to walk me through encounters with difficult people, as a way of reminding me not to act as they do because then I will be in the wrong. It is a difficult notion to return good for evl, but as long as I have Him to help me, I will make it through any adversity.

A book that has small suggestions packed with good, sound Biblical advice! Looking forward to reading many more from this author!
