ABOUT THE BOOK
FBI Agent Laurel Evertson’s investigation into a scam targeting the elderly takes an unexpected twist when key evidence leads her to Morton Wilmington, a felon she arrested five years ago on her first undercover assignment. That case has haunted her since, and though she’s vowed to forget Wilmington—and what she sacrificed to put him away—he is now her best lead. Houston Police Officer Daniel Hilton fears his grandparents may be the scammer’s next targets, and he’ll do anything to protect his family—even force interagency cooperation. But he’s quickly drawn to Laurel’s empathy and zeal and agrees to follow her lead . . . even if it means teaming up with a felon. As the unlikely trio uncovers evidence suggesting the scam is more extensive and deadly than they imagined, both Laurel and Daniel find themselves in the crosshairs of a killer. Together they must decide if they can trust Wilmington’s claims of redemption, or if he’s leading them straight into a double cross.

My Review:
FBI agent, Laurel Evertson, aided in putting a well known scam artist behind bars. When he was put away, he promised her one thing, “She would pay in blood”. Now, years later, Laurel has begun investigating a fraud case involving an elderly couple. She believes she has hit a dead end, until she is called to sit in on an interview with another elderly couple and their grandson, Daniel Hilton.
Daniel Hilton, Houston Police Officer, believes his grandparents have been scammed out of $50,000. He learned of it from his grandfather, an Alzheimer patient, who just happened to remember the day the incident happened. Going to the FBI with all the information they have, Daniel is surprised that they would even take the case, due to the fact that it happened over a month prior.
Laurel believes she can help solve the case, even though it involves a murder. When she receives a code that may help just be a piece of evidence, Laurel goes to the one person she knows can help with decoding. Morton Wilmington, the man she put in prison years prior. She knows it may not be the greatest idea she’s had but it’s all she’s got. As she digs deeper into the case, Laurel is reluctant to let Officer Daniel to help in any way. But she may need his help more than she really knows.
Double Cross is the second book in the FBI: Houston Series. I really enjoy DiAnn Mills’ books, they are always full of adventure and action. This book is a great book, as was Firewall (Book One).
